Existential psychotherapy and pluralistic practice – A workshop with Professor Mick Cooper in Manchester on Saturday 17th October 2015

09:30 – 16:00

Existential psychotherapy and pluralistic practice 1STOPPRESS – Professor Ernesto Spinelli will make a return visit to Stockport on Friday 17th March 2017 to provide insights into his approach to existential psychotherapy.  To find out more click here.

Existential psychotherapy is a rich tapestry of intersecting therapeutic practices that orient themselves around the shared concern of human lived experience (Cooper, 2003).  Pluralistic Practice is an approach to psychotherapy and counselling organised around the philosophical construct of pluralism; and committed to engagement with the client’s view of what will be helpful (Cooper & McLeod, 2011).  Both approaches acknowledge and celebrates difference across the therapeutic spectrum.  In this workshop Mick Cooper brings the approaches together.

About the workshop

Existential psychotherapy and pluralistic practice 2The workshop is based around Mick’s newest publication: ‘Existential psychotherapy and counselling: Contributions to a pluralistic practice’ (Sage, 2015). The workshop offers counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists an opportunity to develop their understanding of existential philosophy and therapeutic approaches, and to look at ways in which it may help them to enhance their therapeutic practice. The workshop will involve a combination of theoretical input, discussion and exercises; and will focus on key aspects of existential thinking and practice, including the exploration of freedom and choice, coming to terms with the limitations of existence, and the need for meaning.

Existential psychotherapy and pluralistic practice 3This represents the convergence of two complementary sets of ideas based on compatible philosophical principles.  Existential psychotherapies are a collection of distinct, but often poorly documented approaches rooted in the writings of key European philosophers.  Pluralistic practice is an approach that admits multiple pathways of change and privileges the goals of the client in selecting the one to be followed.  It is immediately clear that there are considerable synergies between the ideas.  And that they support each other in the development of a comprehensive humanistic approach to practice.  This is another step on the way to the development of a new paradigm that will require new models of training, supervison, professional development and service delivery.
