On the day Jonathan referred to the work of the clinical psychologist David Grove.  This can be a little overwhelming, so here is a contribution from a more modern therapist, Dr Richard Siegel. This describes his approach to metaphor therapy, again based on the work of David Grove. It is illustrated with a large number of examples:

If you have a general interest in clean language, it is worth watching Caitlin Walker’s Ted talk on the subject. She works mainly in the world of corporate coaching where clean language is widely used:

There is a thriving clean community in the UK. To go to its website click here. James Lawley and Penny Tompkins (2000) have documented, codified and extended Groves’ approach. They call this field symbolic modelling. Lawley and Tompkins again work mainly in the field of coaching, although both are UKCP registered psychotherapists. The book is a good read and available on Amazon. There is also a good, but slightly less academic, book by Sullivan and Rees (2008) called Clean language, Revealing metaphors and opening minds. Again, inevitably, available on Amazon.

As requested we have produced a note on clean questions, which can be downloaded by clicking here.

We look forward seeing you again soon.

Best wishes – metaphors be with you – and what would you like to have happen now?
