Myth in Counselling and Psychotherapy: A Workshop in Stockport

Myth in counselling and psychotherapy: 16th May 2014 – 09:30 to 16:00

STOP PRESS – Donna will be returning to Stockport on Friday 21st October to run another session on the use of creativity in therapy.  For further information click here.  Myths are deeply embedded in our culture, and perhaps even our genes. Freud and Jung, used them extensively and many practitioners use myth and metaphor in their work. Yet the use of myth in counselling and psychotherapy is not widely covered in training or the literature. In this workshop Donna Savery will present her approach to myth in counselling and psychotherapy and describe recent research that she has conducted.

About the event

The day will comprise the following elements:

  • A discussion of myth and its meanings
  • Exercises and approaches to the use of myth in counselling and psychotherapy
  • Myth in an existential framework
  • Specific focus and explorations of the Myth of Sisyphus and the Myth of Echo and Narcissus including therapists own personality traits and how they change in different relationship scenarios and impact the client in therapeutic settings.
  • Techniques for effecting change
  • Triads
  • Role play

The workshop will be particularly suitable for counsellors and psychotherapists who want to work more creatively; for those that wish to draw upon rich sources of material that enable more reflective therapy and increase self-awareness for therapist and client; and for those working with clients who present with the following issues:

  • Meaninglessness
  • Death anxiety
  • Co-dependency in relationships
  • Narcissistic entitlement
  • Self-loathing
  • Loss of voice
  • Feelings of non-existence
  • Post traumic stress
  • Victimhood
  • Existential anxiety

The day will be highly interactive and offer opportunities for self development and professional enhancement.  It is suitable for therapists trained in any modality and no former knowledge of myth is required.  Handouts and all required reading material will be provided on the day
