No pussyfooting: CBT for eating disorders – A workshop with Caroline Vermes and Joanne Blezard in Stockport on Thurs 8th September 2016
09:30 – 16:00
CBT for eating disorders may seem like a strange topic for a Mindsite workshop. We have both worked with clients who undereat, overeat and binge; and we have been perplexed by the difficulties it raises. We know something of the physical factors and the emotional issues, but this does not necessarily translate into good outcomes for clients. This is why we have asked two professionals, who specialise in the topic, to come along and tell us about approaches that work. The workshop tackles the issues directly and attempts to show how an approach based of the creative use of CBT can deliver results in a general counselling setting.
CBT for eating disorders covers the elements of successful treatment for clients who request help. It provides an introduction to the contemporary transdiagnostic theoretical framework (Fairburn, 2008), as well as practical application of core therapeutic tasks including formulation, self-monitoring, regular eating and tackling over-evaluation of weight and shape. It will also explore therapist attributes that facilitate an effective working alliance. This workshop aims to be experiential and includes clinical learning via live, interactive demonstrations with an actor. The session is for qualified and trainee therapists with any level of experience, and the learning is beginner to intermediate level.
