If you found David Grove a little overwhelming; here is a more modern therapist, Dr Richard Siegel, describing his approach based on the work of David Grove. He illustrates this with a large number of examples:

If you would like a copy of Jonathan’s thesis then click here. This contains a full bibliography. If you would like further information, you can email him at He now also has a podcast on metaphor on the Counsellor CPD website. To listen click here.

If you have a general interest in clean language, it is worth watching Caitlin Walker’s Ted talk on the subject. She works mainly in the world of corporate coaching where clean language is widely used:

There is a thriving clean community in the UK. To go to its website click here. James Lawley and Penny Tompkins (2000) have documented, codified and extended Groves’ approach. They call this field symbolic modelling. Lawley and Tompkins again work mainly in the field of coaching, although both are UKCP registered psychotherapists. The book is a good read and available on Amazon. There is also a good, but slightly less academic book by Sullivan and Rees (2008) called Clean language, Revealing metaphors and opening minds. Again, inevitably, available on Amazon.

We look forward to meeting you again soon.

Best wishes – metaphors be with you – and what would you like to have happen now?
